Verdant on Awen

Color name: Verdant

Awen is Storyteller Stitchery's 80% merino wool and 20% silk thread, hand-dyed in small batches in our studio in Arizona. Merino is the softest of the wool family. Fine, smooth, and nothing like the coarser tapestry wools you may have encountered. It gives Awen a resilient, forgiving feel that is particularly well suited to beginners and forgiving of tension variations. Because each skein is hand-dyed, colors have a natural depth and variation that commercial threads cannot produce, with subtle shifts within a single color that add dimension to finished stitching.

Awen is our recommended thread for needlepoint on 13ct canvas. One strand fills the canvas, the twist holds up well to the repeated pull of stitching, and the silk content adds an elegant shine to the finished piece. Awen is 2-ply, cannot be separated and in weight it is similar to a Perle cotton #5.

Awen also works well in embroidery where you want texture and depth. If you are used to working with 6-stranded cotton floss, Awen is similar in weight to stitching with all 6 strands at the same time.

10 yards per card.

Caring for Hand-Dyed Fibers

These threads are hand-dyed in small batches in our studio in Arizona.

Steam blocking is recommended for finished needlepoint and embroidery pieces — it relaxes the fibers and evens the stitches without exposing the thread to water.

Our dyes are professional-grade and mostly colorfast, but as with all hand-dyed fiber, we cannot guarantee 100% colorfastness. Please test before washing any finished piece by wetting a small sample and pressing it against a white cloth or paper towel.

Colors may vary slightly between dye batches. If you are stitching a large piece, we recommend purchasing all thread for that piece at once.
