How to Choose the Right Yarn
Choosing the right yarn doesn’t have to feel overwhelming — especially if you’re newer to knitting or crochet. Here’s a simple guide to the most common weights and when to use them, plus how to choose the best Storyteller Stitchery base for your project.
Sock / Fingering Weight
Delicate, lightweight, and wonderfully versatile. Perfect for shawls, socks, accessories, lacework, and year-round garments.
If you’re knitting socks or anything that needs a little extra strength, choose:
- Storyteller Sock — soft with added durability
- Adventure — extra-soft and warm with yak, good for hard-wearing projects (note, this yarn is naturally brown and is a darker color to all other yarn bases after dyeing).
For all other fingering-weight makes (shawls, sweaters, baby knits, accessories), Epic (100% Merino) is a lovely choice — beautifully soft with gorgeous drape.
DK Weight
Soft, comfortable, and easy to work with. Great for hats, cowls, scarves, and sweaters — or any project where you want balance between drape and structure.
Worsted Weight
Warm, cozy, and satisfying for beginners and seasoned makers alike. Perfect for garments, blankets, colorwork, and winter projects with lovely stitch definition.
Aran Weight
A little thicker than worsted, and beautifully textured. Great for quick knits, cables, cozy sweaters, and accessories that hold their shape and work up quickly.
Sock Sets
A coordinated full skein + one or two mini skeins! Ideal for socks, mitts, shawl accents, and colorwork details without the guesswork.
